A striking gorgonian octocoral characterized by slender, branching colonies that sway with surrounding currents rather than resisting them. Its flexible skeletal structure gives the colony its characteristic whip-like appearance, while numerous small polyps extend along the branches to interact directly with the surrounding water. Coloration can vary considerably between colonies, with yellow, orange, red, and purple forms contributing dramatic vertical structure to the marine environment.

Unlike stony corals, sea whips rely on a flexible internal support structure rather than constructing a massive stony framework. This allows the entire colony to bend with water movement while maintaining an elevated, highly branched feeding surface. The result is an organism exceptionally well adapted to extracting suspended food from moving seawater.

Cultivation & Condition

Our Leptogorgia virgulata colonies are fully aquacultured and propagated within our own mature marine systems. They are maintained as part of high-biodiversity environments alongside established microbial communities, planktonic life, algae, and invertebrates rather than being treated as temporary display specimens.

  • 100% aquacultured and propagated in our systems
  • Maintained in mature, high-biodiversity marine environments
  • Selected for healthy tissue and intact branch structure
  • Conditioned under stable water parameters and consistent circulation
  • Observed for healthy polyp extension before selection

Feeding & Ecological Role

  • Polyps capture suspended food particles from moving seawater
  • Branching growth maximizes exposure to passing currents
  • Flexible structure allows colonies to bend naturally with water movement
  • Creates additional three-dimensional habitat and surface area within the aquarium

Notable Biological Trait

What appears to be a single branching animal is actually an interconnected colony composed of many individual coral polyps. Each polyp is an individual animal equipped with eight tentacles, a defining characteristic of octocorals. Together, hundreds of these polyps transform the colony into an extensive suspension-feeding surface.

When conditions are favorable, the difference between a resting and actively feeding colony can be dramatic. Polyps emerge across the branches and give the otherwise smooth sea whip a textured, almost fuzzy appearance as the colony begins intercepting suspended material from the surrounding water.

Aquarium Integration

  • Requires consistent water movement across the colony
  • Benefits from regular access to appropriately sized suspended foods
  • Should be positioned where branches can move freely without abrasion
  • Best maintained in mature systems with stable water quality
  • Regular polyp extension provides a useful visual indication of feeding activity

With its flexible architecture, vivid coloration, and dense covering of individual feeding polyps, Leptogorgia virgulata introduces an entirely different form of life to a marine aquarium. A healthy colony continuously interacts with the current, bending with the surrounding water while extending hundreds of tiny polyps to harvest suspended food from its environment.
